Update 6/30/09

Michael Jackson...........On reflection (from the band)

The 1980’s were a great time for popular music.  Almost every 'mega' act had their golden years during that decade.  People like Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, U2, Prince, Bryan Adams, Journey, The Police, Guns n Roses and Michael Jackson were the reason the 80's were so special. The songs written and performed by these artists have now become the backdrop to our lives. The Outfield was lucky enough (and privileged) to be a part of that 'MTV' musical generation.

During the 1980's, the music industry (and the media machine that drives it along) was always on the look out for next year's new model. As time moved on a lot of the acts mentioned above were relegated in favor of the new bands and artists (some say trends) being promoted by the major record labels. Granted, time should not stand still, but the 1990's & 2000's did not supply us with a similar level of prolific songwriters. With hindsight, it now seems obvious that successful acts born out of the 1980's were clearly taken for granted, as if a new breed would be just around the corner to replace them. Unfortunately, a new generation did not come along to fill that 'popular' artistic songwriting void.

When there is true genius involved (as was the case with Michael Jackson), he should have been handled with a lot more care. Those around him were obviously aware that HE was something special and should have done everything humanly possible to preserve his unique talent. Now he's no longer with us and those who were only too quick to disown him have started singing his praise. Michael Jackson was something special, there's no one around to fill his shoes, and he will be sadly missed by those who care about music for the right reasons.

Michael Jackson was the greatest showman ever to grace this planet..... be happy you had the chance to share his music.

John and Tony.

Update 6/26/09
Special Note Regarding The Passing Of Michael Jackson:

John and Tony are totally stunned at hearing the news about Michael Jackson. Michael was a major influence to music and musicians worldwide. Michael's music crossed so many barriers and nobody could ignore his talent. It's a great loss and we've all lost a  real star.

Update: 5/15/09

Hello Everyone!

As you can tell we're in the process of changing the website up a bit. There will be new stuff added regularly so be sure to check back often! We think you'll like some of the new features that we'll be adding.

It's hard to believe that Summer is almost upon us! Tony and I (John) have continued recording new songs over the past few months. Now comes the hard part of deciding which ones to release! We're hoping to have everything ready to go in the very near future, though.

We can't thank you enough for the continued support throughout the years. It's what keeps us motivated to continue to write and record new material. Be assured that we look forward to touring and seeing everyone again. There's no timetable for tour dates yet, but we will keep you posted as things progress.

More updates to come soon!

Holiday wishes from the band...

Hi everyone.

A big Happy Christmas to you and your families.

Apologies for the big gap in communication, this situation is often beyond our (the bands) control.  That said, please allow us this opportunity to answer a few questions and fill in a few blanks about what's going on with The Outfield and music scene in general.

Tony and I have now almost finished up on a new set of recordings.  It's been a longish process,  mainly due to the fact that we have tried to keep the music spontaneous.  Over the past couple of years we have experimented with various directions and styles in an attempt to keep the songs sounding fresh (whilst still being contemporary).  We feel that we've always been (first and foremost) musicians who wanted to create and record music for the right reasons.

We fully appreciate that the music industry has changed, and realise that the internet has taken the strangle-hold away from the major record labels, albeit giving unknown bands (who might never have been given a recording contract) a chance to get their music out to a wider audience (without major label involvement).  Although this new process had a welcomed free spirit to it, it has in some ways diluted the achievement of 'making it'.  When The Outfield first attempted to get a recording deal we were up against a lot of major artists at their peak, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Bryan Adams, U2, etc. Getting picked up and signed by Columbia in the States during the mid 80's was nothing less than a miracle for a band who originated from the working classes in the East End of London.  It was the goal we had always dreamed of whilst playing an endless string of non paying gigs and recording demo after demo. Thankfully things paid off for us due to what we felt had been a process of hard work meeting opportunity (and some great music).  At that time (in 1984), we believed that getting a record deal was a gold medal reward for all our hard work. We were totally unaware of what lay ahead for us in the years that followed.  The new generation of bands coming through are being denied that sense of achievement as the internet continues to take it's toll on falling CD sales and record company commitment to new artists. Taking all this into consideration, we realise any new music release by The Outfield will be at the mercy of the times we live in.

Recording our new CD has been a self-motivated project.  Whilst recording, we've watched and listened to a collection of established artists attempting to bridge the gap between major label support or going independent.  It would seem the only sustained big success' here in the UK stems from shows like 'X factor' which serves up next years processed artists, albeit that the audience have already conveniently voted for them.  Thankfully singers like Leona Lewis and Alexandra Burke have given the show some credibility but do not equate to the full package songwriter artists like Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, or Rickie Lee Jones.  These new success stories (singers) come without their own material.  How long will it be before the public starts to realise they are being served the same set of songs (by these new artists) every 12 months?  As always, The Outfield still works hard at providing 'original' new music for all the right reasons!!!

Thank you once again for all the letters of concern and support over the past 12 months regarding my (John's) health. Please be assured that everything is moving in the right direction and I look forward to continuing my work with Tony for many years to come.

I / we realise that we keep hinting of possible Outfield live shows.  Please appreciate that we need to have a game plan set out before we can put things into practice.  The obvious first step was to finish off the CD, which is now all but done. The next step is to find some business partners to help put these promises into practice.  We would love to come and play shows but we both feel (as artists) that we need to be moving forward as a band with new material. The last thing Tony or I want is to abuse the support you've given us these past 23 years by playing the same greatest hits package (year after year). We both feel that we owe all our fans and friends new music on a regular basis.  We do hope to see you all during the months ahead.  In the meantime, please check for information as to when the new CD might be available,  we hope the new songs (once released) go some way towards bridging any gap between us.

Once again, love and peace, Have a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.

John and Tony.

Recovery & New Publishing Deal!

Hi everyone,

Just a quick update regarding John Spinks' recent illness.  Having spoken to him this past weekend, I can confirm that things are moving along in a positive direction and that John is on the road to a full recovery.  He has asked me to let everyone know that he thanks you all for your continued concern, support and kind messages. We hope that you all understand that he and his family had wanted to deal with this serious & personal matter without too much fuss.  Therefore, we kept the updates to a minimum.

As always, the songwriting and recording process has continued and there are a number of new songs in the pipe line. In addition, John has recently signed to a new publisher who we hope will be working hard with him and the band in the future to make new Outfield material available.

A message from the band:

It has come to our attention that people are expecting to see The Outfield play shows later this year (2006). Please allow us this moment to clarify that situation.

John has been seriously ill for the past year.  He has undergone major surgery due to a rare liver cancer and he was/is unable (at this present time) to commit to playing shows until such time that he is fully recovered.  However, John and Tony did continue to write and record during the downtime, the outcome of which became some of the extra songs that now appear on the officially released version of 'Any Time Now'.  Although John's condition continues to improve on a daily basis he is still under strict instructions from his doctors not to rush back into any rigorous touring schedule that might hamper his ability to recover fully.

John and Tony would like you all to know that The Outfield is still (to this day) as important to both of them as when they first started putting the band together almost 30 years ago. A big 'thanks' to everyone who still remains loyal to the band and it's music. We intend to keep writing and recording new material throughout 2006 (and beyond).

We will keep you all updated as soon as we have any further information about any future shows.

Have a great summer,

John and Tony.

PS - We have also just recorded a brand new 20th anniversary studio version of 'Your Love' that we hope to make available in some format later this year.

The Outfield Live - Download Now!

After a slight delay in the release schedule, the Live CD is back on track for release, with one major catch: It will be released over the next 3 months as a free download on "TheOutfield.com". Having spent the past few months working out some publishing issues regarding some of the songs that were to be included on the live album, we felt it wasn't fair to make you fans wait any longer for these songs. So we've decided to make them available for download at no cost! Starting with the first two tracks. Other tracks to follow every few weeks, so grab them while you can. These tracks will only be available for a short time. We will also be making a high resolution cover art file available in the coming weeks.

Special thanks to Bruce Sarte for the additional bandwidth to accomodate the live tracks!

YOUR LOVE gets euro-club remake

Lenny McDustin and Herby F, otherwise known as the european phenomenon
DJs@Work, have released a remake of the original classic" Your Love" by The Outfield. This is a fantastic mix that is taking the european club scene by storm! Pop by the DJs@Work website and give it a listen!

YOUR LOVE gets covered in punk

Punk trio" The Butchies" release Your Love cover on their 2004 Yep Roc release "Make Yr Life."

Excerpt from the label review: The closing track is a remake of the 80s band The Outfield’s “Your Love.” Live, The Butchies perform this one at a faster tempo than the original. But for this record, producer Greg Griffith urged the band to slow the tempo down, transforming it into a sad, beautiful ballad. The result is divine, as Kaia practically whispers the first few lines: “Josie’s on a vacation far away, come around and talk it over…”

"Your Love" gets Reggae Update via Wyclef Jean
One of the tracks on the upcoming film soundtrack for Adam Sandler & Drew Barrymore's "50 First Dates" is a newly recorded version of The Outfield classic "Your Love". The new version has WYCLEF JEAN's reggae twist and features actress/rapper EVE.

Here's a strange bit of ironic trivia: The movie will be released in theaters nationwide on Friday, Feb. 13th, 2004 - that just happens to be the very same day The Outfield was in Air Studio's London recording "Your Love" for the Play Deep album.

The soundtrack will be available in early Feb. on Maverick Records.

UPDATE: As of Feb 23, 2004 the movie "50 FIRST DATES" is the Number One movie in the U.S. for the second week in a row, with box office receipts, so far, in excess of 72 million.

"Retro Rewind" Interviews The Outfield
The syndicated radio show Retro Rewind is set to air the first exclusive interviews with The Outfield on the heals of the release of "ANY TIME NOW". The show is available on over 200 major market radio stations across the country, so check with your local stations for availability. The interview segments will also be made available for download on the Retro Rewind website in the weeks following the radio broadcast.

"No Fear" to be used in "No Witness"...
The Outfield track "No Fear" from their upcoming full length CD "ANY TIME NOW" will be used in the upcoming film "No Witness". Green Valley Entertainment is wrapping up the final production in Atlanta in late February. "NO WITNESS" is executive produced by Steve Barnes (known in Atlanta from his stint on the Morning X radio show). The movie also features actors Corey Feldman and Michael Damian. The film is slated for limited theatrical release in April, then for distribution (by Curb Entertainment) on DVD later in the year.
